Characterizing Near?Field Surface Deformation in the 1990 Rudbar Earthquake (Iran) Using Optical Image Correlation

چکیده

The 1990 Rudbar earthquake (Mw 7.3) broke along three right-stepping segments of the left-lateral fault, in western Alborz mountains (Iran), producing ?80 km surface rupture. Previously reported horizontal (?60 cm) field offsets were surprisingly low, and vertical (?95 unexpected, given relatively large moment release, shallow source depth, fault geometry, rake. We characterize displacement from optical image correlation satellite aerial images. A maximum ?6.5 m is observed eastern part rupture consistent with both a sharp pulse release rate ?10 s after initiation, macroseismic isoseismal curves. find ?2.2 mean slip, larger than measurements, but empirical scaling laws based upon seismological release. Estimates zone width on 1 resolution photos (and corrected for smoothing bias) are <200 m; these values increase artificially lower imagery, which more affected by bias. mismatch between displacements suggests probably featured significant off-fault deformation, its low structural maturity. Finally, we document continuation Kabateh segment, east Sefid Rud river. Slip this segment (1–2 m), less neighboring Zard Geli (1.5–6 m). two faults converge at Rud, appears to represent major feature controlling segmentation region.

Bam earthquake: Surface deformation mea- surement using radar interferometry

On the 26th December 2003 an earthquake with MW=6.5 shook a large area of the Kerman Province in Iran. The epicenter of the devastating earthquake was located near the city of Bam. This paper described the application of differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (D-INSAR) and ENVISAT ASAR data to map the coseismic surface deformation caused by the Bam earthquake including the interfe...

The south Manchester Accident Rescue Team and the earthquake in Iran, June 1990.

BMJ 1991;302:1521-3 On the night of 20 June 1990 an earthquake struck the northwestern provinces of Iran. The huge scale of the disaster was apparent immediately-it was thought to be at least similar to that of Armenia in December 1988. The South Manchester Accident Rescue Team (SMART) was included as part of the aid package offered by the disaster unit of the Overseas Development Administratio...

Estimation of myocardial deformation using correlation image velocimetry

BACKGROUND Tagged Magnetic Resonance (tMR) imaging is a powerful technique for determining cardiovascular abnormalities. One of the reasons for tMR not being used in routine clinical practice is the lack of easy-to-use tools for image analysis and strain mapping. In this paper, we introduce a novel interdisciplinary method based on correlation image velocimetry (CIV) to estimate cardiac deforma...

Optical near-fields & nearfield optics

Optical methods provide exceedingly powerful tools in science and technology for measuring, analyzing and manipulating, from optical microscopy and spectroscopy to the characterization of ultrafast processes by femtosecond pulses and the modification of materials by intense laser radiation. However, when it comes to applications in the nanometer-regime, the conventional optical techniques suffe...

Post-disaster resettlement, development and change: a case study of the 1990 Manjil earthquake in Iran.

Planned and involuntary resettlement after natural disasters has been a major policy in post-disaster reconstruction in developing countries over the past few decades. Studies show that resettlement can result in significant adverse impacts on the resettled population. Conversely, a well-planned and managed resettlement process can produce positive long-term development outcomes. This article p...
